Transitions

Baptism – On Mother’s Day at North Derby, we welcomed into the community of faith, Case Alexander, son of Ted and Alissa Barnard; and Trent Willis, son of Tracey and Matthew Bryan.

Births – We celebrate the arrival of:  David George Hunt (Kilsyth); Levi George Whitney (Keady); and Colton Alexander Joseph Gauer (Keady).

Weddings – Our congratulations go out to Nicholas and Stephanie (Payne) McNabb, married August 3rd at Tom and Marilyn McNabb’s farm.

Passings – With great sadness we mark the passing of ones held dear to our hearts – Roberta Vokes, Ron Kuhl, Andy Thompson. Our prayers go out to the families.

Big Birthdays – We extend warm wishes to Mervin Johnson and Verna Nicholls on the occasion of their 90th birthdays, Bill Sopp on his 96th; and June Morrison, who turned 80.

Sabbatical Update – Having completed 5 continuous years pastoring to the KKND Pastoral Charge, Deborah is granted 4 months Sabbatical beginning June 2014.

Jubilee – In June, Deborah began a program called “Jubilee Ontario” which focuses on spiritual deepening and spiritual practices. From the Jubilee handbook:  “If we integrate our learning into our very being and pay sufficient attention to our spiritual journey, we in turn are better able to walk with others.”

Kilsyth UC Sponsors Student Award at Derby School – Clara Hill, a resident of Kilsyth village, was the student chosen by the Parent Council to receive the first “Caring for the Community” award. Heather Morrison presented the award at the Derby School year-end awards ceremony, on behalf of Kilsyth UC. In addition to a certificate, the award has a $25 cash prize.

Fundscript  – order dates for the Keady and North Derby congregations are Oct 6, Nov 10, and Dec 8. Don’t forget to use Fundscript for Christmas gift buying.

Grey Roots Church Build – Close to $900 was raised at the dessert auction following the June anniversary service of the Kilsyth church. All the proceeds are being directed to the build of the church at Grey Roots Museum. Two Grey Roots staff were on hand to show drawings for the proposed church. Many thanks to Howard Greig, auctioneer.

Community News

Derby School Matters, A decision on the future of the Derby School is expected on October 15, 7 pm,  at the meeting of the Bluewater District School Board in Chesley. Everyone is asked to attend and show your support. A bus leaves from the school at 6:15 pm.

Congratulations to Kathy Underwood, a member of Sarawak UC, who has been appointed as the new part-time chaplain at the Grey-Bruce Hospice, located in the Seasons seniors residence.

Congrats to the Rev. Shawn Ankemen, minister of Flesherton and Eugenia United Churches, who in June opened a new cafe “Highland Grounds” in Flesherton, located on the main street. Shawn has a passion for delicious Fairtrade coffee and tea, and bakes the best pumpkin muffins. Drop in and introduce yourself.
